For two decades I watched program after program promise freedom.

Maybe it's late. Everyone's asleep. You've got YouTube open and about fourteen tabs going. Everybody online seems to be making money, and every one of them is selling a course on how they did it.

You close the laptop more confused than when you opened it.

And somewhere under the confusion, there's a quieter voice:

"Who am I to do this? I'm not techy. I'm not a salesperson. And what if it's a scam?"

I know what it feels like.

Here's the truth: you don't need to know everything to start. You need to know what to look for, and you need something that carries the parts you don't know yet.

What starting online actually looks like

Strip away the hype and every online business runs on the same four pieces:

A way to be seen. The places people already know you: social media, groups you belong to, everyday conversations.
A page that explains what you offer. When someone's curious, you don't have to explain everything from scratch every single time.
A way to stay in touch. Most people don't say yes the first time. Follow-up emails keep the conversation going for days or weeks, even while you're at work or with your kids.
Something genuinely worth buying. A product people would want even with no business attached to it.

Most people quit because they think they have to build all four themselves before they've earned a dime. Websites. Emails. Sales scripts. That's the overwhelm.

You don't.

HOW A GOOD SYSTEM CARRIES IT FOR YOU

Here are the questions I wish someone had handed me 20 years ago:

Does it pay you every month for work you already did? Look past the bonuses. Bonuses are one-time. Residuals are what build freedom.
Has the company been around at least 5 years? Most don't make it past 2.
Do you trust the people at the top? Not their hype. Their track record.
Would people buy the product with no business attached?
Can you earn from customers alone, without building and babysitting a big team?

HBA is the first thing I've ever run through those questions that came out clean. I've watched the owners, Mike and Paul, for seven years: their character, their consistency, the heart they have for their people. I don't trust many people. They've earned mine.

The honest part

The beginning is mostly learning and showing up. Small wins come first: your first real conversation, your first sign-up, your first customer. It feels slow before it feels easy. And no sales means no income. Anyone who tells you otherwise isn't being straight with you.

Your action step

Grab a piece of paper and write down the four pieces. Next to each one, write either "I'd build this myself" or "I want this done for me."

Be honest about the time and energy you actually have. Then look at your list. That's your answer to "where do I start."
